A Science Fair is an annual exhibition of students' scientific projects, experiments or collections. A project may show original research or be a demonstration of a biological, chemical, physical, or engineering principle, a software or hardware computer application, a laboratory procedure, an industrial development or an orderly collection in the broad concept of pure and applied science. WHO MAY ENTER? To be eligible a student must be under the age of 21, attending classes in a public, private or parochial school or its equivalent in the Ottawa area, and be in grades 7 -12. HOW ARE EXHIBITS JUDGED ? Judging of the exhibits is done by a committee of scientists, educators, engineers, doctors and other specially qualified individuals in the community. Judging is done in accordance with the following criteria:
QU'EST CE QUE L'EXPO-SCIENCES? L'Expo-sciences est une exposition qui permet aux étudiants de présenter des projets, des expériences ou des collections à caractère scientifique. Les projets peuvent être des recherches originales ou des démonstrations de principes biologiques, chimiques, physiques, mathématiques ou techniques, ou encore d’expériences faites en laboratoire, de développements industriels ou enfin de collections ordonnées de tout ce qui a trait aux sciences pures et appliquées ou à l'ingénierie. QUI PEUT Y PARTICIPER? Tout étudiant de moins de 21 ans, inscrit à temps plein dans une école publique, privée ou paroissiale de la région d'Ottawa peut participer à l'Expo-sciences. Les participants doivent être du niveau secondaire (de la 7e à la 12e année). COMMENT LES EXPOSITIONS SONT-ELLES ÉVALUÉES? Les expositions sont évaluées par un comité composé de scientifiques, d'enseignants, d'ingénieurs, de médecins et d’autres personnes qualifiées. L’évaluation se déroule selon les critères suivants :
CATEGORY AWARDS AND PRIZES Category Awards: The Ottawa Regional Science Fair Committee awards, at the discretion of the judges, 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes in each of the Fair Categories and in each of the Fair divisions. 1st place winners of each division category receive a trophy and a cash prize of $75, second place winners receive a trophy and a cash prize of $60, and third place winners each receive a trophy and a cash prize of $50. Divisions Categories Life Sciences Junior, Biotechnology Intermediate, Health Sciences and Senior Physical & Mathematical Sciences for each division Engineering & Computing Sciences Earth & Environmental Sciences CANADA WIDE SCIENCE FAIR Several exhibits will be chosen to represent the Ottawa Region at the Canada Wide Science Fair, to be held this year in Saguenay, Quebec, May 13-21, 2006. The Ottawa Regional Science Fair raises funds towards sending eligible exhibits to the Canada Wide Science Fair through the generous support of our sponsors.  RÉCOMPENSES ET PRIX DE CATÉGORIE Prix de catégorie : Le comité de l'Expo-sciences régionale d'Ottawa remettra aux meilleurs exposants des prix dans chacune des divisions suivantes. Les gagnants de chaque catégorie recevront un trophée et un chèque de 75 $. Les gagnants de deuxième place dans chaque catégorie recevront un trophée et un chèque de 60 $ et ceux de troisième place dans chaque catégorie recevront un trophée et un chèque de 50 $. Divisions Catégories Sciences de la vie Junior, Biotechnologie intermédiare, Sciences de la santé et senior pour Sciences physiques et mathématiques chaque division Ingénierie et l’informatique Sciences de la terre et de l’environnement L'EXPO-SCIENCES PAN-CANADIENNE Chaque année un nombre de projets seront choisis pour représenter la région d'Ottawa à l'Expo-sciences pan-canadienne qui aura lieu cette année à Saguenay, Québec du 13 au 21 mai 2006. L'Expo-sciences régionale d'Ottawa tente de ramasser suffisamment de fonds pour envoyer ces projets à l'Expo-sciences pan-canadienne grâce aux contributions des commanditaires.   SPECIAL AWARDSThe following organizations provide special awards pertaining to the interests of the individual organizations. The awards are judged and presented by a representative of the organization. A variety of prizes, consisting of student trophies, school trophies, cash awards, books etc. are awarded. These awards are presented based on the availability of eligible projects. All cash prizes must be shared if the project was completed by 2 students. American Society for Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers, Inc. - Ottawa Valley Chapter - Criteria: Must be related to the HVAC industry or have some potential application - Awards (3): Jun: $100, Int: $200, Sen: $300 ASM International, Ottawa Valley Chapter - Criteria: Project using materials, innovation and creativity - Awards (2): Jun Int Sen: $50, Jun Int Sen: $50 Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society - Ottawa Centre - Criteria: Excellence in meteorological and/or oceanographic theme - Awards (2): Jun Int Sen: $100 + Certificate + school plaque to be held by school for the year, Jun Int Sen: 75$ + Certificate Canadian Museum of Nature - Criteria: Project should relate to natural sciences, environment change and/or human interaction with nature - Awards (2): Jun Int: Geological or fossil specimen, Sen: Geological specimen Canadian Nuclear Society - Ottawa Branch - Criteria: Best project in any category showing the beneficial uses of nuclear science and technology in electricity production, medicine, industry, transportation, environmental protection (e.g. restricting global warming) or other application - Award (1): Jun Int Sen: $75 + Certificate Canadian Society for Civil Engineering - National Capital Section - Criteria: Civil engineering content - Awards (2): Jun Int Sen: $100 + certificate , Jun Int Sen: $100 + certificate Carleton University Science and Engineering Entrance Award - Criteria: Best Grade 12 project - Award (1): Sen: $1000 entrance scholarship COM DEV Ltd. - Criteria: outstanding or innovative projects in the areas of aerospace, communication science or engineering - Awards (3): Jun Int Sen: $100 and a plaque, Jun Int Sen: $100 and a plaque, Jun Int Sen: $100 and a plaque Environment Canada - Canadian Wildlife Service - Criteria: Award is given to an entry that has a wildlife, wildlife conservation, or natural history theme - Award (1): Jun Int Sen: $50 gift certificate from the Canadian Museum of Nature Boutique Gamma Dynacare - GDML Medical Life Science Award - Criteria: The most outstanding project related to medical laboratory science in one of the following fields: chemistry, microbiology, hematology, histology, cytology or transfusion medicine - Awards (3): Jun: $100 + plaque + gift certificate, Int: $100 + plaque + gift certificate, Sen: $100 + plaque + gift certificate National Police Services - RCMP - Criteria: To be given to a project in recognition of a scientific contribution to law enforcement and/or public safety of Canadians - Awards (3): Jun: $50 + pen, Int: $50 + pen, Sen: $50 + pen Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences - Criteria: Most outstanding project related to earth sciences - Awards (4): Jun: Prize pack (2), Int: Prize pack, Jun Int Sen: Prize pack Ontario Association of Medical Laboratories - Criteria: This award is presented to the top laboratory sciences project. - Award (2): Jun Int Sen: $100.00, Jun Int Sen: $100.00 Ontario Institute of Agrologists - Ottawa-St. Lawrence Branch - Criteria: Best science project(s) depicting agriculture. - Awards (3): Jun Int Sen: $100 + Plaque + School trophy, Jun Int Sen: $75, Jun Int Sen: $50 Ottawa Field-Naturalists' Club - Criteria: Natural history - General - Awards (3): Jun Int Sen: $50 + 1 year membership to OFN , Jun Int Sen: $50 + 1 year membership to OFN , Jun Int Sen: $50 + 1 year membership to OFN Ottawa Horticultural Society - Criteria: to a student who has demonstrated a keen interest, knowledge and creativity in the area of horticulture and/or plant science through an outstanding project - Award (2): Jun: $75, Int: $75 Ottawa Regional Science Fair Committee - Consumer Products - Criteria: Excellence in research relating to consumer products - Awards (3): Jun Int Sen: $75 Partners in Research and the Friends of The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (FCIHR) - Criteria: Best science projects relevant to medicine - Awards (3): Jun Int Sen: Each prize winner will be presented with a certificate and will also be a special guest of the PIR/FCIHR at the "Ottawa Evening" in May. This event will take place at the Ottawa Congress Centre and will feature a speech by a well-known personality on a theme of current medical interest. Professional Engineers Ontario - Ottawa Chapter - Criteria: Innovative and interesting application of scientific knowledge and engineering principles in solving an engineering problem. - Awards (3): Jun Int Sen: $50 Public Information and Education Branch - Parks Canada - Criteria: related to the natural environment - Award (1): Jun Int Sen: Discovery Package - Pass to all National Parks and National Historic Sites of Canada Science Teachers' Association of Ontario - Criteria: most outstanding award in the area of health sciences - Award (1): Jun Int Sen: $75 Sigma Xi.
